Texas Firefighter Games kick off in San Angelo

San Angelo, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) - Hundreds of firefighters and their families from across the state are in San Angelo for the Texas Firefighter Games.

Sunday was the opening ceremonies at San Angelo Stadium, followed by the first sporting competition, power lifting. Each day firefighters compete and get to show off their skills in different sports.

The firefighters come from all over Texas and surrounding states.

The games were also held in San Angelo, back in 2009. Organizers say it's a good time to unwind.

"It's rewarding to be able to bring everyone together. That's the big part. We get to learn different aspects of firefighting to learn what goes on in daily jobs. Basically just get away from the station for a little while and get to see everybody," says Eric Harr, the Texas Firefighter Games president.

The games continue through Friday.

They're free for anyone who wants to support the firefighters. You can find the schedule online by following this link: http://texasfirefightergames.com/2017schedule.htm
