The Abilene Police Department Could Be Movin' On Up

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) - The Abilene Police Department is considering relocating their law enforcement center to the old K-Mart building on S. 1st Street.

The building, which has sat abandoned since K-Mart closed its doors in December, offers nearly triple the amount of space than the current Law Enforcement Center at 450 Pecan Street.

The new Law Enforcement site would also include building space from an old mattress store and the Winn Dixie Grocery store.

Chief of Police Stan Standridge introduced the possibility of the LEC relocating during a city council media briefing Monday morning.

No official price tag has been attached to the move, but if the Abilene Police Department relocates the LEC, they will no longer need to build a new police and records building, as approved during a bond election in May of 2015.

Chief Standridge also stated that these preliminary plans have only involved the Abilene Police Department. He's unsure if the Taylor County Sheriff's Office, which is also located at the LEC on Pecan Street, would be moving into the new location as well.

These plans are in the initial stages and will be discussed in more detail in upcoming City Council meetings.
