Toddler abandoned in Juarez returns to US, reportedly with father

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) - The toddler abandoned by his mother in Juarez earlier this year is now back on American soil, the El Paso Police Department announced via tweet Saturday.

According to the department's Crimes Against Persons unit, Luis Mendez, 4, returned to the United States and Child Protective Services Friday evening. According to El Diario de Juarez, Luis has also reunited with his father, Jorge Luis Mendez, after being in custody of Mexican authorities for four months.

The boy's mother, Ruby Esmeralda Gonzalez, admittedly left Luis in an abandoned warehouse in Juarez back in February in hopes of giving him "a better life".

Gonzalez is currently behind bars at the El Paso County Detention Center where she faces charges including Abandon/Endanger Child Imminent Danger, False Report to a Peace Officer, Federal Special Investigator, or Law Enforcement Employee, and Injury to a Child w/Intent Bodily Injury.
