Unaccompanied Air Force veteran to be buried in Abilene Tuesday

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) - An unaccompanied Air Force veteran will be laid to rest in Abilene during a special ceremony Tuesday morning. 

Robert "Bob" Merle Doss  will be buried at the Texas State Veteran Cemetery 7457 West Lake Road. A full military burial service is set to begin at 11:00 a.m.

Texas State Veteran officials are asking anyone who has the opportunity to please come and attend Mr. Doss' burial. 

Unaccompanied veteran burials take place to ensure veterans with no loved ones to attend their services are not forgotten or left behind. 

A brief biography on Mr. Doss' life provided by the Texas General Land Office reads as follows: 

Robert, 82, Passed Away July 15, 2017 in Sid Peterson Hospital in Kerrville. He enlisted in the United States Air Force April 13, 1954, and was honorably discharged on November 28, 1957. He attended the University of Houston and received a Bachelor's of Science in Education in 1974. He then went on to get his Masters Degree in Education at Pan American University in Edinburg.

According to reports to the VLB, Mr. Doss was an educator and taught for many years. He received many cards and notes of endearment from students naming him as their "favorite teacher." He was of strong Christian faith and studied his Bible faithfully. Robert was preceded in death by his parents and a brother. He is survived by his dogs Gracie, Matthew, Pumpkin and Abigale, who he loved dearly.
