RUNNELS COUNTY, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) - Five unclaimed veterans' remains were escorted through the Big Country Thursday afternoon as they made their way from Amarillo to the the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.
The San Antonio Patriot Guard led the remains through Sweetwater, then down to Winters and on past Ballinger during day one of the two day journey.
KTAB and KRBC spoke with community members lining the roads along the way, who said that they were honored to show support to the men and women who fought for American's freedom.
These community members told KTAB and KRBC they are also grateful for groups like the San Antonio Patriot Guard, who act as the friends and family for these veterans who leave no loved ones behind.
The remains are scheduled to arrive in San Antonio for a burial ceremony on Friday.
The five veterans being transported include 3 from the Vietnam War (1 Army, 2 Air Force), 1 from the Korean War (Air Force) and one Navy Veteran.
