Update: Body found in Lubbock playa lake identified

LUBBOCK, Texas (EverythingLubbock.com) - Lubbock Police were called to 54th Street and Albany Avenue Monday morning for the report of a dead body in a playa lake. That location is north of the South Plains Mall.

For a time, crime scene tape was placed around a portion of the lake which is inside Buster Long Park.  By 10:40 a.m. the crime tape was removed and many officers left the scene.

The first report of an issue at the lake was actually early Saturday morning.

“[Firefighters] responded on a report of a truck that went into the lake,” Lubbock Fire Rescue said.  “With assistance from the neighbors who saw the vehicle sink, Dive19 was able to triangulate the location of the truck which was unoccupied and get it out of lake.”

Then, on Monday morning someone called police to say a body was located.

A police spokeswoman said many details were not yet known and the case was still under investigation.

Late Monday afternoon, the Lubbock County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the deceased as 20-year-old Francisco Juarez.

His next of kin has been notified.

Below is a written statement released late Monday morning by Lubbock Police:

At two a.m. Saturday, July 1st, Lubbock Police were called to the playa lake at 54th and Albany for reports of a vehicle in the water.

When an officer arrived on the scene, he saw a vehicle in the lake and then tried to swim out to the vehicle. However, once the officer got to a certain point in the lake, the vehicle was fully submerged.

The officer then called for additional back-up, as well as the Lubbock Fire Rescue dive team, to search for a possible body.

When the LFR dive team arrived, they began searching the area, but were not able to find a body. Due to strong storms Saturday morning, which included lightning, the search ended around 5:45 a.m. Police did attempt to contact the owner of the vehicle after it was pulled from the playa lake, however, they were unable to do so.

At 8:44 a.m. Monday, July 3rd, officers were called to the same playa lake for a report of a possible dead body. Once officers arrived, they located the body, and then called for the LFR dive team, as well as the Medical Examiner’s office.

The body was then retrieved from the water, with the scene cleared around 10:30 a.m.  An investigation is on-going.
