Vandals Cause Local Internet Outage

Customers in several towns across the Big Country have been without power for the past few days after vandals targeted a section of fiber.

A representative with Windstream Internet told KTAB and KRBC, "a section of fiber between Blackwell and Abilene was damaged by vandals early Monday morning."

This caused a widespread internet outage across the region. Some customers report losing voice services as well.

Windstream says customers in Blackwell, Merkel, Clyde, Baird, and Cross Plains are affected by the outage. Customers in other towns could be affected as well.

"Crews have not been able to replace the damaged cable because it is close to the high voltage electric lines on the transmission towers," according to a press release.

Service is expected to be restored by Thursday after the lines are de-energized so crews can make repairs safely.

BigCountryHomepage has received reports that other internet providers are experiencing similar outage issues, but those reports have not been confirmed. Check back for the latest.
