Victims of Icy Nolan County Crash Recovering in Lubbock

NOLAN COUNTY, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) - Two men are continuing to recover after a head-on collision on an icy bridge in Nolan County Monday morning.

Colorado City veterinarian Justin Goebel and Sweetwater resident Sam Lucero were both driving their pickup trucks on Hwy 70 when they hit a patch of ice on a bridge just south of Sweetwater and crashed into each other around 7:30 a.m.

Both trucks then crashed into guardrails, and both drivers underwent "lengthy extrications", according to the Sweetwater Fire Department.

A YouCaring page says Goebel was air-lifted from the scene of the crash to Abilene and then to Dallas.

He is now in surgical ICU at University Medical Center in Lubbock, hospital staff told KTAB and KRBC.

Goebel is recovering from damage to liver, spleen, and other internal organs as well as numerous fractures and breaks, according to the YouCaring page

A GoFundMe account says Lucero was taken from Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital in Nolan County to Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock where he is recovering from multiple broken bones, kidney damage and a collapsed lung.

Both the Goebel and Lucero families are asking for prayers as the men continue to recover.
