West Texas 2nd Grade Student Dies after Collapsing on Playground

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) - A second grade student at Eastwood Heights Elementary school collapsed during school hours on Tuesday has died.

The boy was on the playground during lunchtime Tuesday with classmates when he suddenly collapsed, hit his head and struggled to breathe. Witnesses say the school nurse performed CPR and the child was rushed to a nearby hospital.

A YISD spokeswoman told NewsChannel 9 in a text message Tuesday night that "out of courtesy for the parents, YISD will refrain from any comments until the family indicates otherwise."

Wednesday morning, YISD officials including associate superintendent Pat O'Neill,  were on campus to announce the boy's death to students. The administration advised parents that counselors had been brought in from other schools in the district to assist. A note is expected to go home with students Wednesday.

NewsChannel 9 is aware of the student's name and a GoFundMe set up to assist the family, but we will not be releasing it until YISD officials give authorization do to so.
