Abilene Police have arrested the man in connection with a shooting Saturday evening.

Harman Benitez Jr., 29, was accused of shooting his girlfriend in the shoulder on the 700 block of Beechwood Lane. Police issued a search warrant for aggravated assault/family violence which lasted for nearly seven hours. He fled on a tow truck and later transferred to a black suburban, APD says.

According to police, they received information that the suspect was inside the home on the 2000 block of Chestnut Street. Earlier that day, an officer saw suspicious activity in the residence. Benitez was seen leaving the back door and running back inside after he saw police, says APD.

An application for a search warrant was issued and the SWAT team and negotiators arrived. The crew released tear gas in the home but Benitez was hiding in a crawl space where the gas couldn't reach.

At around 7:30 p.m., APD was able to go inside the house and capture Benitez.

Neighbors were evacuated and had to wait outside for answers. Some waited patiently while others were concerned.
