One Dead in ISISD Bus Crash


HOWARD COUNTY, TX -- BigCountryHomepage is continuing to follow a story that broke overnight regarding a deadly crash involving an Iraan-Sheffield ISD bus and an 18-wheeler on I-20 near mile marker 176.

The Department of Public Safety confirms one is dead and seven are injured after a bus crash late Friday night involving an Iraan ISD bus carrying school cheerleaders.

In a news release, DPS said a truck tractor towing a semi-trailer was traveling eastbound on I20 behind a black passenger car.

DPS says the black car slammed on its breaks causing the 18-wheeler to swerve past the center median into westbound traffic, striking the school bus.

52-year-old Elizabeth Pope was pronounced dead at Scenic Mountain Medical Center Friday night.

6 other teenagers and the school bus driver were transported to SMMC with injuries.

SMMC spokeswoman Amanda Duforat said Saturday that four of those patients have since been transported to other facilities for additional care.

According to the Public Information Officer of University Medical Center in Lubbock, UMC was sent 4 victims from this crash.  As of 2:45 this afternoon 3 victims were still at UMC, one victim had already been discharged.

A community is grieving the tragedy and has taken to social media to show their support, thoughts and prayers.

Regarding the accident Congressman-Elect Jodey Arrington has issued the following statement.

“Please join me in praying for the eight cheerleaders who were injured in the bus crash in Big Spring last night. I am praying for wisdom for the doctors, comfort for their families, and healing for the injured.”
