Police: Evidence of ATM skimming found in south Abilene

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) - Police are warning citizens after evidence of possible ATM skimming was found in south Abilene.

A press release states that on Monday, July 3rd, a repairman noticed tampering on an ATM machine inside a convenience store near the intersection of Chimney Rock Road and Buffalo Gap Road.

The Abilene Police Department Fraud Unit is investigating the incident. Detectives also believe two other ATMs could have been targeted by skimmers, but did not specify which ones.

Police want to remind consumers to remain vigilant while using ATM machines. They say consumers can take the following steps to ensure their information is protected:

  • Citizens should check the machine for any loose swipe points, pinhole camera or any other suspicious tampering with the device prior to using.
  • Citizens should report any issues with the machine to the store owner.
  • Citizens should also make a regular check of their bank account for any suspicious activity and report them to their bank.
  • If there are any fraudulent purchases, citizens are urged to contact the Abilene Police Department to file a report
