"It's a war between good and evil," said Steve Abel of the Better Business Bureau in Abilene. "Identity theft is still a big issue."

Protecting ourselves from hackers and online predators seems to have become a full time job.

Abel added, that now more than ever, identity thieves have gotten better at obtaining our personal information.

"Use good computing habits. If you don't know what you're doing, it's not best to make transactions or do business online," he said.

If you're still learning about online shopping or making purchases via the web, he recommends you get informed before you put anything out there. Calling on the telephone may be the best way for you to educate yourself.

More importantly, Abel explains to keep your personal documents away from your purse or wallet. "Don't carry that stuff in there. This is still the number one way you lose your credit identity is a lost or stolen wallet or purse."

If you know for a fact that your information has been tampered with, Abel recommends reporting it to police.

"A police report is important for you. There's numbers of resources here. We've got a kit here at the BBB, so if they wanna call us or come by."
