In 2002, Governor Rick Perry established the Texas Amber Alert system, as other states followed suit. Shortly after the system was adopted in Texas, the first alert was issued from Abilene after the kidnapping of 1-month-old, Nancy Chavez.
From then to the end of 2013, Chavez is included in a total of 124 children who have been recovered during 109 DPS activations of the Texas Amber Alert System. In some cases, more than one child was rescued.
