Small town hospitals are struggling because of the effects of federal healthcare policies. Hamlin Memorial Hospital had to lay off half a dozen employees. They say the issue of healthcare costs is linked to their cut-backs.

According to Bloomberg, since June 2013, United States hospitals have dismissed 5,000 employees. Local hospitals say these budget cuts are related to the decrease in reimbursements from certain healthcare providers.

Shackelford County encountered the decline in reimbursement rates. They shut down their hospital and opened a clinic to cut costs.
