With many children starting school it's very common they may get a cold. That's why many parents choose to vaccinate their children before going back to school. However, there are some parents in the Big Country that have not vaccinated their children before school.

Parents are allowed to exempt their children from vaccinations. All they have to do is fill out paperwork from the Austin Texas Health Department. Many parents choose not to vaccinate their children because of conscientious or religious beliefs. While other parents choose not to because of medical conditions.

According to last year statistics there hasn't been much change to the amount of parents not vaccinating their children. In 2013 there were 59 medical exemptions and 53 conscientious exemptions, but in 2014 there were 52 medical exemptions and 67 conscientious exemptions.

When a disease outbreak occurs, the school calls parents to those children who have not been vaccinated. After the school calls the parents it is up to their discretion to decide what to do with their own child.

The Director of Health Services for Abilene ISD suggests that all children should get vaccinated.
