FORT SMITH, Ark. – Junior Brandon Golden came off the bench and netted a game-high 19 points, however, McMurry University dropped a 75-66 decision to the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith Thursday evening in Heartland Conference action.
The War Hawks suffered their third defeat in a row and have dropped five of their past six.
UAFS (13-3, 6-2 HC) would lead by as much as 11 points in the first stanza, but McM slowly chipped away at the lead and found themselves down 41-40 at intermission.
A bucket from freshman Jordan Holmes (Silsbee,Texas/Silsbee HS) at 18:08 in the second half put the War Hawks up 43-41.
However, in a matter of minutes, a two-point lead quickly turned into a seven-point deficit and the War Hawks' offense sputtered and couldn't keep up with the Lions.
Both teams fared well in front of the basket, with McM winning the scoring advantage by a 38-36 margin. However, the Lions won the rebounding battle with a 43-36 edge.
The Lions entered the game as one of the premier three-point shooting teams in the Heartland, and the War Hawks held them to three trey balls on 10 attempts.
Senior Alfred Perez (Spring, Texas/Klein Collins HS) chipped in 13 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
Junior Alex Lewis (Converse, Texas/Temple College) helped out with 10 points and Kourtney Goff (Rochester, N.Y./Southern Illinois University) scored eight points.
McM (8-9, 3-5 HC) returns to the hardwood Saturday afternoon with a 3 p.m. tip at Rogers State University.
