KERRVILLE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons’ men’s golf team shot its best round since October of 2010 with a 291 total and they came within one shot of second place at the Schreiner Spring Shootout at the par-72, 7,059-yard Comanche Trace Golf Club in Kerrville.
The Cowboys were in eighth place in the nine-team field after the first round but the 291 shot them up the leaderboard into a tie for fifth place with Trinity and one stroke out of a three-way tie for second place with Concordia, Mary Hardin-Baylor and Centenary. Host Schreiner ran away from the field with a 295-290-585 total, 15 shots ahead of the trio in second place.
Freshman Sam Rogers led the Cowboys’ charge on Tuesday with a career-best round of 70. He finished tied with teammate Ryan Hughes in fifth place with a 146 total, after shooting 76 in the first round. He had the only two eagles in the tournament. Hughes shot 74-72.
Brandon Heard shot 78-76-154. Junior Sean Aleman shook off his tough start to the spring season with a 73. He shot 83-73-156 in the tournament. Austin Prior finished with an 82-84-166.
