ABILENE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons’ women’s basketball team lost its third straight nail biter, falling 71-69 to Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday afternoon in American Southwest Conference action at the Mabee Complex.
The first half featured four ties and three lead changes and neither team led by more than five points. Hsu led 24-19 after a Joanna Daniel 3-pointer with 8:12 to play in the half and the Cru rolled off seven straight points to take a 26-24 lead. They maintained the lead until HSU scored the final nine points of the half to take a 39-34 halftime lead.
The Cowgirls eventually pushed the lead to 61-47 with 11:21 to play on a pair of free throws by Jaclyn von der Heide. The Cru then used a 22-4 run over the next 9:13. The Cowgirls did not have a field goal from the 13:11 mark to the 1:52 mark.
HSU tied the game at 69 on a pair of free throws by Kourtney Holyfield with :37 to play, but Macy Moore hit a driving layup with :16 to play to give UMHB a 71-69 lead. Holyfield missed a shot to tie at the end.
Shelby Hanna scored a career-best 16 points and five rebounds and five assists to pace HSU. Taylor Klement recorded her second straight double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds and she also had seven assists and three blocks. Holyfield had 15 points and Daniel added 12 points.
Taylor Tucker had 21 points and 10 rebounds and Macy Moore had 13 points and 11 rebounds. Jovana Miles added 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The Cowgirls are now 5-9 on the year and 5-6 in conference play. UMHB improved to 9-6 overall and 9-3 in conference action. HSU remains home next week to host Texas-Tyler on Thursday and Ozarks on Saturday.
