PUEBLO, Colo. – Keshia Collins scored a team-high 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field, but it wasn't enough as Colorado State University-Pueblo used a fast start to bury McMurry University, 69-49.
The ThunderWolves (2-1) jumped out to an early 12-2 lead, but the War Hawks slowly chipped its way back.
Collins (Midland, Texas/Midland HS) converted a pair of free throws with five minutes remaining in the first half to bring McM to within 24-19.
However, CSU-Pueblo responded with a 13-3 run to close out the first half and led 37-23 at halftime.
The ThunderHawks continued their offensive pressure early in the second stanza, but the War Hawks fought back.
Collins' jumper at the 5:59-mark in the second half brought McM to within 53-47, but that's as close as the War Hawks would come as the ThunderHawks closed out the game with a 16-3 run.
Katy Boren (Lubbock, Texas/Lubbock-Cooper HS), Adijatu Disu (Chicago, Ill./Texas Southern University) and Tineka Lawson (Houston, Texas/Hill College) each chipped in six points.
CSU-Pueblo won the battle in the paint. The War Hawks were outscored 10-2 and outrebounded 41-32.
Alex Evans led CSU-Pueblo with 20 points.
McM (0-3) returns to action Saturday (2 p.m.) against Colorado School of Mines.
