ABILENE, Texas – No. 22-ranked Angelo State University swept McMurry University by scores of 3-2 and 10-2 in the season debuts for both squads Saturday afternoon at Walt Driggers Field.
"There were some good things and some bad things today," McM head coach John Byington said. "In the first game they did a better job of executing than us and in the second game they just got on a roll. We didn't want to open the season with two loses like this and we'll need to rebound."
In the first game of the double-header ASU scored runs in the third and fourth innings and jumped out to a 2-0 lead.
Eric Moritz (San Antonio, Texas/Churchill HS) scored on an error in the seventh inning to put the War Hawks on board. Ricky Garcia (Hollister, Calif./Mission College) scored on a bases-loaded walk in the eighth inning.
Lanny Zier (Southlake, Texas/UNC-Ashville) was tagged with the loss for the War Hawks. In seven innings of duty he allowed five hits, two runs and one walk and struck out five.
Moritz batted 2 for 5 and Greg Koll (Burbank, Calif./Pierce College) finished 1 for 3.
In the second game of the twin bill ASU (2-0) exploded for six runs in the fourth inning and cruised to a 10-2 win.
Zack Hagan (Round Rock, Texas/Texas College) and Kyle Sargent (Weatherford, Texas/Tyler JC) scored runs in the fifth inning for the War Hawks.
Mitch Labbie (San Mateo, Calif./Canada JC) suffered the loss. In 3.2 innings of duty he allowed nine hits, seven runs and no walks and struck out four.
McM (0-2) returns to the diamond next weekend with a three-game set against Colorado Christian University at Driggers Field.
