OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – In the rubber game of the series, McMurry University dropped a 4-2 decision versus No. 7 regionally-ranked Oklahoma Christian University at Dobson Field.
With the loss, the War Hawks fell to 13-19 overall, 7-10 in the Heartland Conference. The Eagles improved to 18-9 on the year, 12-6 in the Heartland.
McMurry starter Ben Bates (1-4) gave his team a strong six innings, absorbing the loss. Bates allowed six of the Eagles’ eight hits and three runs (two earned). He struck out six OC batters wan walked just one. Lanny Zier and Trevor Ragsdale each threw an inning of relief, as well.
Oklahoma Christian scored single runs in the first and third innings to lead 2-0 before McMurry responded.
Both of McM’s scores came in the bottom of the fifth frame. Eric Preuss led off with an infield single to short and, with Jeremy Ruiz at the plate, went to second on a wild pitch. Ruiz singled Preuss over to third, putting runners at the corners. Greg Koll slapped the third-consecutive single of the innings, scoring Preuss with Ruiz stopping at second to make it 2-1.
Kyle Sargent laid down a sacrifice bunt and was safe on a fielding error by the OC catcher, loading the bases for Christian Simmons. Simmons then lifted a sacrifice fly that allowed Ruiz to score, tying the game at 2-2.
The Eagles got to Bates for one more run in the sixth and another insurance run off Zier in the seventh for the 4-2 final score.
McMurry matched OC in hits with eight. Sargent and Koll both went 2-for-4 on the day to lead McM’s offensive attack.
A total of three Eagles’ pitchers had nine strikeouts and did not walk anyone.
