BEAUMONT, Texas – It may not have officially counted, but McMurry University’s men’s basketball team gave NCAA Division I foe Lamar University all it wanted in an exhibition game, before eventually falling on the road, 66-62. The War Hawks actually led, 59-58, in the waning minutes but could not get a field goal the final 3:22 of the game.

It was an impressive outing for an McM roster has just three returning players from last season, not to mention a brand new head coach in first-year man Clif Carroll.

But when the dust of the game had settled, it was two veteran players – Alfred Perez and Connor Robinson – that led the team’s offensive punch. Perez tallied a team-leading 17 points, while Robinson added 16 as the only other War Hawk in double figure scoring.

Both men also shot well from the floor, spearheading McM’s inside game. Perez hit 7-of-9 (78 percent) from the floor, while Robinson converted 6-of-10 (60 percent) attempts.

Brandon Golden contributed nine points. Kourtney Goff and Thiago Randazzo tossed in eight points, apiece.
Goff and Hondo Webb – who played for Lamar last season – shared McMurry’s top rebound honors with seven caroms each. Randazzo and Robinson each had six boards.

McMurry led at the intermission, 30-29. It was Golden’s layup with 3:22 left in the game that put his team on top, 59-58. However, the visiting War Hawks would muster just three free throws down the stretch for the 66-62 final score.
Neither team was able to do much from beyond the arc, with McMurry hitting just 12.5 percent (2-of-16) and Lamar 28.6 percent (4-of-14). McM out-rebounded the Cardinals by a 47-39 margin.
