Comanche County firefighters battled a grass fire Saturday afternoon that took nearly six hours to extinguish.

Fifty-five firefighters from Comanche, Proctor, Gustine, Gorman, Early, Blanket, De Leon and Prometory Park responded to the call around noon.

According to Comanche Volunteer Fire Department, strong winds caused the electrical lines on the road to rub together and spark a fire. Nearly 200 acres were burned around the Comanche airport.

The tall grass and gusts made it difficult to contain, Comanche VFD says. At around 6 p.m., a unit at the scene was able to stop the flames.
