A major reconstruction project in Sweetwater is making progress.
According to the Texas Department of Transportation, the project to fix 1.3 miles of Lamar Street from Arizona to Avenue B is 25% complete.
"The work is ahead of schedule thus far, but it's not anywhere near completion," TxDOT Public Information Officer said. "Things have been moving along very smoothly and we hope that continues."
Crews are responsible for rebuilding the road base, lay new asphalt and build concrete intersections to improve drainage. Two lanes have been closed since the project started but as of Wednesday, crews have switched to the opposite side of the road.
Some business owners feel the construction has negatively impacted revenue. Others feel not much has changed and that parking was the only concern. Alley ways were created for cars to enter business areas, but some say it can be dangerous with how narrow the lanes are.
Overall, many feel that the construction is much needed to improve Sweetwater as a whole.
"We just had rough spots on it, and I feel this will do a lot of great work," Grady Ragland, liquor store owner said. "The crews are doing a fast job."
