Several fire departments are working to contain a grass fire on FM 89 near Mountain Pass in Merkel.

The Mulberry Canyon fire department responded to the call before 2 p.m. on Sunday. At first they had it under control, but needed assistance less than an hour later. There are no structures nearby.

Four bulldozers were called to create lines and the Texas A&M Forest Service had an aircraft do an aerial supervision to get a better understanding of the fire.

As of 5 p.m., the fire burned 50 acres and is 70% contained. The juniper trees and thick brush in the area are making it hard to contain, Texas A&M Forest Service says.

"We're really happy that all the departments and entities are working together as one team to get the fire out as safely and quickly as possible," Phillip Truitt, Texas A&M Forest Service public information officer said.
