This year the Bulldogs find themselves in one of the toughest districts in the state, and matched-up against two of the best offenses Class 4A has to offer. That means the Bulldogs will need another solid year from Johnston.
"The whole defensive staff, the whole coaching staff, they just put me in the right position. Which was really the only thing that matters because I committed and I played the best I can. Thank the lord obvioulsy, but just worked hard and it payed off," said Clay Johnston.
Last season, as a junior, Johnston tallied an impressive 138 tackles, 34 tackles-for-loss, and six sacks. Those numbers were good enough to earn Johnston district defensive MVP, and an all-state selection. Now this year he'll look to build on those numbers in his senior season.
"I just want to play the best I can, and make a difference towards this team. I just want to win a district championship. It will to be tough, we've got a really good district this year. I just want to play my hard out. I just want to play to the best of my ability. That's all the lord asks," said Johnston.
Johnston and his teammates also have some high goals set for this upcoming season.
"We want to bring home the title. I mean it's been ten years since 2004. I know they've had good teams in the past, but we just want to make a difference and go all the way. I feel like we've got something special going on," said Johnston.
The Bulldogs will need a big year from their defense if they're going to achieve goals, and that includes another solid season from linebacker Clay Johnston. That makes him a player to watch in 2014.
