The fun starts at Shotwell Stadium on Thursday, August 28th. The Cooper Cougars begin their season against Wichita Falls Rider in the 1st game of the Champions Classic. The Cougars and head coach Todd Moebes enter the game with a new quarterback in David Rout and several other new starters. Cooper is ranked 9th in the newly reconfigured Class 5A, and Rider is ranked 19th by Texas Football Magazine. The Cougars have won 3 of the last 4 meetings between the 2 teams.
The Wylie Bulldogs face one of the toughest opener of any team in the Big Country on the 1st Friday of the season. They travel to take on defending state champion Argyle. This the 3rd year in a row the Bulldogs and Eagles open the season against one another. Wylie won in Argyle in 2012, and Argyle returned the favor to open the 2013 season. Wylie is looking for 7 starters on both sides of the ball, but the foundation for a good defense is in place with Clay Johnston and Baylen Baker.
A Class 2A match up in Hamlin is getting some attention. The 12th ranked Anson Tigers make the short trip west to take on the 9th ranked Pied Pipers. The Chris Hagler era in Anson starts with a Hamlin team that is loaded to start the season. The Pipers enter 2014 with 15 positions filled with returners including leading rusher Tyrone Johnson. Anson needs to replace quarterback Jalen Garza, but 7 are back on offense to help the new quarterback get used to leading the charge.
3 games earn honorable mention for Week 1 of the new season. 9th ranked Goldthwaite and number 1 ranked Mart get together at Mary Hardin-Baylor on August 28th. Class 4A Sweetwater hosts Class 5A Lubbock High in the Sammy Baugh Classic, and District 4-3A favorite Breckenridge goes to defending state champion Cisco.
