The high school football season is right around the corner, and the Action Zone Champions Classic will kick-off the season at Shotwell Stadium in 2014.

This year will not only feature the Abilene High Eagles, but also their crosstown rivals, the Cooper Cougars,

Cooper will start the season on Thursday August 28th at 7:30 p.m. against Wichita Falls Rider. The Cougars are coming off a trip to the third round of the playoffs, and find themselves dropping to what is now Class 5A in 2014. They will match-up with a solid Rider squad that is coming off a trip to the playoffs a year ago.

Abilene High will welcome Colleyville Heritage to Shotwell Stadium the following night. The Eagles are coming off a year where they missed the playoffs, the first such season since 1998, but return plenty of key players off last year's team that appeared to be peaking towards the end of the season.

Colleyville Heritage is a new opponent for the Eagles this year, and has plenty of talent back from a team that reached the postseason a year ago.

For the Eagles it will also be the tenth straight year they have played in the Champions Classic.

"It's a great way to start the season, number one. It's a great event for our city. One of the constants of the Classic, and it's been evolving over ten years, one of the first classics around the state, is the Abilene Eagles. We've been in every single one of them, and we're proud to be a part of it and look forward to doing that again. We're excited. It's a new year. There's always a lot of excitement this time of the year. Every body is gearing up, getting ready to start practice here in about a week. We had a great spring and a great summer, and we're looking forward to transferring that out on to the field on Friday nights," said Abilene High head coach Steve Warren.

The Champions Classic Weekend will wrap up with Brady and Brock in the Saturday night cap on August 30th at 7 p.m.

The Bulldogs are picked to make a return trip to the postseason this year with a veteran team that returns nine starters on defense, and eight on offense.

Brock also returns a ton of starters on both sides of the ball this year, but is fielding a team in district competition for the first time in 2014.
