ACU Hires Miguez as New Strength Coach

May 31st, 2017 - ABILENE – ACU announced Wednesday that it has hired Bret Miguez as the new director of strength and conditioning for ACU Athletics. His first day on the job was Tuesday.

Miguez joins the ACU staff after spending the two previous seasons as the head strength and conditioning coach at South Dakota School of Mines where he was the program’s first strength and conditioning coach. He has worked at Air Force, Northwest Missouri State, Colorado College, the University of Kansas, Boston University and UMass-Boston in addition to his time in South Dakota.

While at the Air Force Academy, Bret worked with more than 11 different sports teams, including football, basketball, volleyball and hockey. At the time, current ACU associate director of athletics for internal operations, Drew Long, was an assistant basketball coach at Air Force. In addition to working at USAFA, Bret was a volunteer assistant strength and conditioning coach at Colorado College.

The opportunity to return to the NCAA Division I setting was appealing, as was the opportunity to return closer to his Louisiana roots.

“The chance to be at ACU and back in Division I athletics is such a blessing,” said Miguez, a Louisiana native whose family still lives in and around the New Orleans area. “I grew up following the teams in the Southland Conference, so to have the opportunity to essentially come home after being away for 12 years is awesome.

“I know the legacy that this conference has in athletics, and I also know the legacy of ACU Athletics and the great things the student-athletes and coaches have accomplished here over the years,” he said. “I know the last couple of guys in my position have done great things, and I’m looking forward to building on those.”

Miguez obtained a master’s degree from Northwest Missouri State University where he worked as a strength and conditioning graduate assistant. During his time at NWMSU, he was part of the 2014 NCAA Division II national championship football team.  While at Northwest, he worked with current ACU head football coach Adam Dorrel.

Miguez earned a bachelor’s degree in management with a minor in exercise health science from the University of Massachusetts Boston.  While studying at UMass he worked as a Volunteer Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach at Milton Academy.

Miguez holds a CSCS, SCCC, USAW-1, and CPR/First Aid/AED certification. In addition, he sits on the ND/SD National Strength and Conditioning Association Advisory Board and is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association, Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association, United State Weightlifting Association, and American Football Coaches Association.

We are thrilled to add Bret Miguez to our staff,” said Lisa Gilmore, associate director of athletics for student-athlete welfare and supervisor of the strength and conditioning program. “He has great energy and enthusiasm for strength and conditioning and a great heart for developing student-athletes, physically, as we well as mentally and spiritually. I'm so excited for his leadership in our strength and conditioning department and I'm looking forward to the impact he can make on our student-athletes and all of our programs.”
