Most teams don't want the open date to come the week before the playoffs, but for Cooper, the week without a game couldn't have come at a better time.

Quarterback Lorenzo Joe broke his hand in Friday's loss to Central, so he will have a week to recover from Monday's surgery and get ready for the Cougars playoff game.

Head coach Todd Moebes said, "Kind of fortunate that we have our open date where we do.  At the beginning of the season, we would have probably said we wish it would have been some where in the middle, but that was deemed for us about 2 years ago.

Coach Moebes on Joe's toughness and ability to play through the broken hand, "What a leader. Just a tough kid, but not only lead by example of being able to play through an injury like that, but it didn't effect him, one bit, in his leadership vocally, as well. He was the same type of guy that he was on the sideline. (I am) real proud of his efforts to try and play through something like that."

Joe and the Cougars don't know which El Paso team they will face in the 1st round, so they will just have to wait and see.
