HSU Men Win, Women Fall To Howard Payne

Cowgirls Lose At Howard Payne

BROWNWOOD, Texas -- Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team put up a valiant effort against division leading Howard Payne but fell 75-68 at the Brownwood Coliseum on Saturday afternoon.
 
The first quarter featured three ties and four lead changes as the Cowgirls led 18-16 after the first period. HSU pushed the lead out to 22-16 early in the second quarter and led most of the rest of the quarter until Presley McKethan hit a 3-pointer right before the half to tie the game at 32.
 
In the third quarter the Lady Jackets opened their biggest lead of the game when McKethan hit a 3-pointer again late in the quarter to make it 54-48.
 
HPU pushed the lead to 62-51 with 4:52 to play, but the Cowgirls had one more push in them and cut the deficit to 66-63 with 1:11 to play on a Ja'Lee Carver layup. That is the closest they would get as HPU hit seven of eight free throws in the final :20 as the Cowgirls played the foul game to extend the game.
 
Danie Mabry led the Cowgirls with 16 points, Kourtney Holyfield added 14 and Deontae Ingram added 12.
 
Sarahi Castillo led Howard Payne with 27 points and Micah Cisneroz added 14.
 
HSU is now 8-13 overall and 4-9 in conference play. Howard Payne improved to 14-8 overall and 11-2 in ASC action. The Cowgirls will play at McMurry next Saturday in their next action. 
 
 
 
 
MEN'S BASKETBALL:
 
Cowboys Snap Skid With Win At Howard Payne
 
BROWNWOOD, Texas -- Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team snapped its two-game losing streak with a convincing win over Howard Payne Saturday afternoon at the Brownwood Coliseum.
 
The Cowboys came out firing on all cylinders and Dashun Dixon and Caleb Spoon hit a combined four straight 3-pointers to give HSU an early 20-4 lead.
 
Howard Payne made a push and cut the Cowboy lead to 30-24 but the Cowboys closed the half on a 13-3 run and led 43-27 at halftime.
 
HSU came out strong in the second half and pushed the lead to 50-31 early in the second half but the Cowboys never let the Jackets within eight points the rest of the way.
 
Nathaniel Jack led the Cowboys with 23 points and 13 rebounds. Christian O'Neal had 19 points and passed the 1,000-point mark for his career. Caleb Spoon added 16 points and Dashun Dixon and Justin Jones had 10 points each.
 
Khyce Randall had 20 points and DeMarcus Hurd added 13 for Howard Payne.
 
HSU is now 16-6 on the year and 10-3 in conference play. Howard Payne fell to 12-9 overall and 8-5 in ASC action. The Cowboys will play at McMurry next Saturday.
