With a new coaching staff in Houston also comes a shake-up for the quarterbacks in training camp. Ryan Fitzpatrick was named the starter before camp opened, but former Wylie Bulldog Case Keenum is in the hunt for the back-up spot.

Keenum started eight games last season for previous head coach Gary Kubiak. In those eight starts, Keenum threw for 1,700 yards and nine touchdowns.

This past offseason the Texans made a big change in terms of the quarterback spot. First, they traded away former starter Matt Schaub to the Oakland Raiders. Then the Texans signed former Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Just before camp opened new head coach Bill O'Brien named Fitzpatrick the team's starting quarterback entering training camp. Leaving the back-up spot open for Keenum and rookie Tom Savage to compete.

Now the challenge for O'Brien and his staff is to give practice reps to both their starter, as well as Keenum and Savage.

"[Ryan Fitzgerald] right now is getting the bulk ofthe reps, and then right now Case [Keenum] is getting the second most  and Tommy [Savage] gets quote-en-quote the second most. Basically Tommy gets a lot of reps of his own because we do a two-spot drill in the beginning of practice. We'll do more of those, where he gets his own reps and then Case comes over and gets some of those reps too. Then it balances itself out, and then we determine who's ahead of who after a few practices. However many practices we think we need to determine who the back-up quarterback is going to be. We'll take our time with that, but right now it's Ryan, it's Case, and then it's Tom," said head coach Bill O'Brien.

The first chance for any of the three quarterbacks to see action on the field this year will be in the preseason opener against the Arizona Cardinals on August 9th.
