McGehee Tabbed To Lead In Sweetwater

February 21, 2017 - Temple associate head football coach Ben McGehee is the finalist for the athletic director/head football coaching job in Sweetwater.

McGehee comes to Sweetwater after assistant coaching jobs in Brownwood, at Cooper, with former head coach Mike Spradlin, Palestine, and Temple where he was eventually elevated to associate head coach and offensive coordinator.

He was a part of two state championship appearances in Temple.

McGehee's offenses were number one in the state in 2014 and 2015.

He honed his athletic director skills as the girls coordinator for the last three years.

In five years at Cooper, McGehee helped turn a Cougars program around. The Cougars went from one district win before he and coach Spradlin arrived to four straight playoff appearances.

Sweetwater Superintendent Terry Pittman said, "We had over 100 applicants and a great pool to choose from, the committee interviewed 9 candidates and were very thorough. The field was narrowed to 2 and Coach Mc Gehee just rose to the top as being the man to lead the athletes of Sweetwater for years to come."

Pittman is also excited about McGehee's ties to the community, saying, "He has ties to the area and a very distinguished record as an Associate Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator at Temple High School. He has coached in 2 State Championship games in the last 3 years as well as serving as the Girls Coordinator for the School. He and his family are very excited to become part of the Sweetwater family."

McGehee takes over the program that was led to the Class 4A Division II state championship game by Shane Mobley, who left last month.

McGehee's name will be presented to the Sweetwater School Board on Thursday, and his first day on the job is scheduled to be March 1st.
