McMurry sweeps HSU in Crosstown Showdown

January 25th, 2018 - ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons’ women’s basketball team cut a 19-point deficit to five points but came up short in a 70-60 American Southwest Conference loss to McMurry on Thursday night at Kimbrell Arena.

McMurry jumped out to an early 7-2 lead and never trailed. They pushed the lead out to 19-10 before the Cowgirls scored the final four points of the first quarter to make it 19-14. McMurry led 34-26 at halftime.

The War Hawks pushed the lead out to 19 at 55-36 with 1:54 to play in the third quarter.

HSU chipped away the rest of the way and Addison Garcia’s shot in the paint cut the deficit to 63-58 with 2:13 to play but the Cowgirls could not get closer and McMurry sealed the game at the foul line in the final two minutes.

Taylor Gaffney and Addison Garcia each scored 14 points to lead Hardin-Simmons. Gaffney also added seven assists and five steals.

Skyler Reyna led four War Hawks in double figures with 19 points and she also added 12 rebounds.

HSU is now 4-15 on the year and 2-10 in conference play. McMurry improved to 11-7 overall and 9-3 in ASC action. HSU will be off until next Thursday when it travels to Concordia.

The McMurry men also came away victorious in the collegiate Crosstown Showdown tonight. 

The War Hawks snuck away with a 5 point victory over the Cowboys, taking the game 83-78 at Kimbrell Arena. 

McMurry hosts Arlington Baptist on Friday night.
