Mustangs Anticipate Fun State Atmosphere

June 28th, 2017 - The State 7-on-7 Championships start Thursday down in College Station for Division II.

Three Big Country teams are headed south including the Sweetwater Mustangs. This state tournament isn't nearly as important to the players as winning the State Championship in Arlington in December, but since they are competitors, the Mustangs want to win. That said, there are other cool things about this weekend's tournament.

"We're excited about the atmosphere, it's always fun. You get to meet a lot of guys you don't usually get to hang around," Chris Thompson said. "At the hotel you just get to chill with the guys and bond. I've just been working on being a better team player and just learning the offense better, being able to read defenses and just getting better chemistry with my guys. to hang out with a lot of guys."

"The kids are starting to learn and are starting to pick up on a lot of the concepts and have showed a lot of improvement and a lot of progressions over the course of the summer," Ben McGehee said. "It's been fun this summer watching them start to pick it up and start to get comfortable with it."

The Mustangs start the tournament against West Thursday at 1 p.m.. They are joined in College Station in Division II by Wylie and Brownwood. Cooper and Abilene High start the tournament on Friday.
