The Stamford Bulldogs are back in the state semifinals for the third straight year. The only thing standing between them and a third straight trip to AT&T Stadium is the Hico Tigers.

On Monday night the Bulldogs picked up a win over New Deal, but Stamford needed some late game heroics to get past the Lions.

"As the game went on, it was back and forth, and when it came down to it our defense stepped up at the very end on a crucial fourth down and four. Our defense stepped up and made a great play, which allowed our offense to come back and put us in a position to win the ball game," said head coach Wayne Hutchinson.

The touchdown pass from Bo Wimberly to James Washington with 34 seconds on the clock is the play many will remember, but there a lot more went into allowing the Bulldogs to win.

"We talked about doing the little thigns all year, and how when it came down to crunch time it would pay off in the end. Against New Deal the little things showed up. Showed that we've been doing things right, and it ended up paying off at the end of that game," said senior Ty McLemore.

Now the Bulldogs shift their focus to a Hico squad that picked up a 14-7 win over Goldthwaite on Saturday.

Many would worry about a team looking past an opponent in the semifinals, and on to the big game in Arlington. The Bulldogs on the the other hand are focused on just one thing, the Hico Tigers.

"We talk about every week ,'we can only control the things that we can control.' We really put the precedence on us. We want to make sure we're taking care of business, preparing mentaly, taking care of the fundamentals of football, and just preparing ourselves," said Hutchinson.

"We know that in order to get to where we want to be, which is the state game, we've got to get through Hico first. We know that we've got to look at them first, study them, and not look ahead, because in order to get there we have to beat Hico. We can't look ahead and past that because they're a good football team," said McLemore.

Stamford will take on Hico Saturday afternoon in San Angelo. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
