It came as a shock to some a few weeks back when Wayne Hutchinson accepted the head coaching job at Class 6A Lubbock Monterey. During his eight years in Stamford Hutchinson led the Bulldogs to a 76-24 record and back-to-back state titles in 2012 and 2013.
Rather than looking to the outside for a new coach, Stamford instead chose to look down the bench to one of Hutchinson's assistants.
Ronnie Casey now takes over the helm in Stamford after serving as special teams coordinator for the football team.
"Fortunately enough this morning at 7 a.m., as cold as it was, I was able to walk in and have our superintendent Dr. Shaun Barnett say that I was going to be the new head football coach and athletic director. It made my day. We get to keep our coaching staff intact. Hopefully we don't lose anybody else. So, we'll be able to keep the same system, and the same defense. Roll with it and continue to press on forward like we have in the past," said head coach Casey.
Casey most recently was the Bulldogs head basketball coach and led Stamford deep into the playoffs over the past two years. That includes an appearance in the regional finals in 2013.
