Texas football: Class 2A predictions

July 2nd, 2017 - The Albany Lions start out ranked third in Class 2A Division II. 14 positions are filled by starters from the 2016 region semifinal team. Six on offense and eight on defense including their three top offensive players. Quarterback Brian Hamilton returns for his senior season after passing for 2,000 yards and 37 touchdowns last season. The other two are wide receivers Adam Faith and Dax Neece. The Lions are picked to win District 6-2A Division II.

The other three teams in the district are Baird, Cross Plains and Winters. The Buffaloes are picked second behind Albany, Baird is fourth and the Blizzards are fifth.

Another team ranked in the preseason top ten are the DeLeon Bearcats in Division I. Quarterback Kevin Yeager returns to lead the offense again. Last season Yeager had 41 touchdowns and 3,022 passing yards. He'll be joined by a handful of returning starters, which is one reason DeLeon is the preseason number six pick. Crawford is picked number one in District 7-2A DI.

Also in that district are the Goldthwaite Eagles. They return their top skill position players including Christian Valencia who had 1,378 passing yards as QB in 2016. 

Staying in 2A Divsion I, the Anson Tigers make their appearance in the top 20 at number 11. QB Drew Hagler and running back Nick Tanner return to lead the Tiger offense along with three other returning starters, and defensively the Tigers have some weapons back including linebacker Chris Jones. In 2016 Jones had 154 tackles and 9 sacks. Anson is picked to win District 4-2A Division I.

They'll be competing against the Hawley Bearcats and Stamford Bulldogs in that district. Hawley was the 2016 area finalist behind the leadership of quarterback Quay Stokes who returns for his senior season after starting since his freshman season. The Bearcats have a handful of weapons for Stokes and a defense to back him up.Stamford had a tough 2016 district season going 0-4. They're picked last in District 4-2A. One player to watch for the Bulldogs is tight end and linebacker Lonnie Applin.

Now for a closer look at the Division II 2A teams. Three schools other than Albany are ranked in the top 20. The Munday Moguls come in at preseason number 8 and are picked to win District 7-2A. They return 7 on the offensive side of the ball and 5 on the defensive. Alex Thorn is the guy to keep an eye on. He brings a lot of speed for the Moguls. He had 5 interceptions in 2016 and plays both sides of the ball.

The Haskell Indians are also in that district and come in at number 5 and have 7 positions filled by starters.

Finally, District 4-2A has two teams in the top 20. Hamlin comes in at 10 and Roscoe is right behind them at number 11. The Pied Pipers are picked to win the district after a strong 10-3 2016 season. They have 12 positions filled by starters including quarterback Ayron Wagner who had 18 touchdowns and 1,240 passing yards last season.

The Plowboys are picked to finish second in the district. They return 8 on the offensive side and 8 on the defensive side. Wide receiver Jose Ortega is one to keep an eye on as one of the top receivers in 2A with 14 touchdown receptions in 2016.

The Roby Lions round out that district for the Big Country coming in as the last pick in district 4-2A Division II.

The Ranger Bulldogs are picked last in District 8-2A Division II after going 0-5 in district in 2016.
