Top Matchups: Crosstown Showdown, Albany & Cisco

July 13th, 2017 - When you live inside the Abilene Independent School District, you have to pick a side. You are either an Abilene High Eagle or you are a Cooper Cougar. It's either black and gold or red and blue.

This series has always been one-sided. For the first 42 years, Cooper won 31 times including streaks of fifteen and eight. The tables have turned in the last fourteen with the Eagles claiming twelve wins including the last three.

This year's Crosstown Showdown is a non-district game, again. Abilene High is picked to win District 3-6A even though all but two offensive positions are going to filled with new starters.

Cooper is expected to be the runner-up in District 4-5A this year, but they start the season at number 23 in Texas Football's Top 25. The Eagles and Cougars score points by the bucket full against each, recently.

They combined for 186 in the last two contests. The Crosstown Showdown is at Shotwell Stadium in Week 3.

Two weeks later, the state-ranked Cisco Loboes host the state-ranked Albany Lions at Chesley Field in another powerhouse match up.

These two met last year, and the Loboes came out on top to snap Albany's 44-game home winning streak. That should add a little spice to this one.

Class 2A Division II schools don't typically play Class 3A Division II schools these days. That said, look for these two to go toe-to-toe from start to finish.
