War Hawks Knock Off HSU for Second Time in 2018

March 13, 2018 - ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University softball completed its “season sweep” of crosstown foe Hardin-Simmons University, scoring a 4-1 win at Red Bud Park. The victory helped the War Hawks improve to 4-13 on the year, in what was considered a non-conference game due to the rotation in this year’s American Southwest Conference schedule.

Whether or not it was a league game took a back seat to the fact that it was a McMurry-Hardin-Simmons matchup. The Cowgirls (0-15) came into the game searching for their first win of 2018 and left still looking, thanks in part to the bat of junior firstbaseman Rachel Ripley.

In the bottom of the first inning, leadoff hitter Ashley McClellan singled to center and, with Ripley at the plate, stole second base. But, as it turned out, all McClellan did was pad her stats because she would have seen second base anyway, after Ripley slugged her team-leading fourth home run of the season. Ripley’s blast made it 2-0 and would prove to be all the runs the War Hawks would need, especially behind the pitching of Cheyenne West.

West scattered eight hits – her only mistake was a solo homer in the top of the seventh – and a complete game. West struck out two and walked one, improving her personal record to 2-6 on the season.

Meanwhile, the McM batters gave West some additional support in the first inning, plating two more runs in the first inning after Ripley’s rocket.  Summer Quiroga, who reached on a walk, eventually scored on a wild pitch. Adrienne Nairn added an RBI single that made it 4-0.

McClellan was 2-for-3 for the day, as was Ripley.  Each scored a run, as well.

McM’s number four batter – Kayla Otis – was 1-for-3 with a double.  Shortstop Avery McDaniel had a single, giving the War Hawks seven total hits on the afternoon. The Cowgirls had eight hits as a team.

McMurry will travel to Alpine on Friday-Saturday (March 16-17) for a three-game series at Sul Ross State University.
