Wolves winning with defense

November 21, 2017 - You've heard the familiar phrase "defense wins championships." Well for Colorado City, that phrase rings true. The Wolves are on a 10 game winning streak, and are district champs and bi-district champions this season.

Erick Hernandez said, "It feels exciting. This team is unbelievable, we're coming together as a family and the chemistry we have is unbelievable."

Colorado City has been great offensively, but their defense has really been outstanding. In the last 6 games of the regular season, the Wolves only allowed 2 points. Total.

Hernandez said, "I think it's just more of experience, we had a lot of returning defensive players, we just have that experience and don't have a lot of young guys, it's just a team thing."

Gavino Silva said, "We've practiced on defense so much it's just become natural to keep everybody in front of us and not let them behind us."

To be that successful on D, you have to come out with an attitude. And that's exactly what Colorado City does out on the field.

Jacob Munoz said, "I think just kind of gritty. Coach always says 'make it ugly, make it ugly.' So that's what we try to do."

Hernandez said, "We try being aggressive and mean and stuff but I don't know, it just doesn't feel that way because we're all hyping each other up and stuff. I guess we don't know that we're mean but we actually are."

And Coach Gainey is proud of how hard his team has worked this season.

Dan Gainey said, "It's neat when your kids are playing that well, they take a lot of pride in it. I think we responded well last week when Tulia got in the endzone twice. I like to think that people are going to have a hard time scoring on us."

The Wolves will look to continue their 10 game winning streak on Friday when they play Tolar in the area round of the playoffs. In Colorado City for bigcountryhomepage.com sports, I'm Mary Margaret Johnson.
