Head coach Hugh Sandifer and his team were ready to hit the field.
Sandifer said, "The kids are excited. They're anxious. They're nervous. This 2014 season doesn't start when you hit that crash sign opening night, and they've laid the foundation and now the excitement of coming out and actually getting to work on football drills and football plays. It's just a great time."
The Bulldogs return 4 starters on both sides of the ball, and the defensive side looks to be the most secure. BCH Sports Players to Watch Baylen Baker and Clay Johnston, both are Division I commits, anchor that side of the ball at defensive end and linebacker.
Sandifer said, "I mean, it's always good to have good players. I'm never going to lie about that, and they're ready to go, and the most important thing to them is the Wylie Bulldogs. We've got a lot of kids that have a little playing experience, and that's what excites me. Not necessarily a lot of starters back, but some guys that've on the field."
Like most of his other 28 seasons at Wylie, Coach Sandifer's offense will feature a first year quarterback. J.T. Cary takes over under center for the Bulldogs. It's a tough job, but Sandifer says he's got plenty of help to get the job done.
Sandifer said, "Everybody at quarterback, no matter where they are in the state of Texas today, is amped up, wanting to do the best on every play, but as a quarterback, you just got a slow down, trust your reads, do some things right, get some confidence, and I think anybody at quarterback that we put on the field is going to be that type of player."
The most important thing right now for the Bulldogs is the work that has to get done between now and August 29th.
Sandifer said, "It's not a sprint. It's a marathon. If you want to play a long time, you kind of keep things in perspective, but we're not going to try to curb their enthusiasm right now because these guys are fired up and ready to go, and that's what makes these guys good."
Trey Kleffner is the leading returning rusher for the Bulldogs.
Wylie is picked to finish the season second in District 3-4A Division I.
The Bulldogs open the 2014 season on the road against defending state champion Argyle.
