ABILENE, Texas — Mondays are typically the mandatory NCAA off day for the Hardin-Simmons football team and this week 12 of the Cowboys spent their off day speaking to students at Clack Middle School.
The 12 HSU student-athletes, who were scattered throughout the day, talked to each of Vickie McQueen’s seven periods about perseverance, making good choices, importance of academics and discipline.
“Our guys really enjoyed interacting with the kids over at Clack,” said HSU Head Coach Jesse Burleson. “You have a really attentive audience because those kids will listen. We hope that the Clack students were able to take something from our players.”
“The team always enjoys going out and interacting with the community and it goes into our philosophy of developing the whole person not just the football player.”
The 12 players that went to Clack included Zeth Barron, Derek Footer, Weston Garner, Matt Hall, Garrett Martin, Jacob Peacock, Jonathan Petty, Cameron Prater, Stehl Raliff, Jessie Ramos, Ivan Shelnutt and Matt Wamble.
HSU football also had a few guys help with the punt pass and kick competition at Taylor Elementary on Monday.
