The Cooper Cougars could be on the verge of winning a district title in Week 9. They play their season finale at Shotwell Stadium against San Angelo Central. This game was one of the best games of the season in 2012. Cooper came from behind to beat the Bobcats 21-17. Cooper scored the final 14 points of the game and held on for dear life at the end to get the win. This year, Cooper has 9 starters back from last season. Central has the most returning starters returning of any team in District 2-5A. Both teams have their eyes set on a district championship, and a win in this game could accomplish that goal.
On to District 4-3A, where the Sweetwater Mustangs revisit their most disappointing loss of the season against Monahans. Sweetwater led the Loboes in a game they had to have last year with 9 minutes to go, but the Loboes came back to get the win. The loss kept Sweetwater out of the playoffs. This year both teams are expected to go to the playoffs, but the Sweetwater players are using their loss to Monahans to fuel them for the upcoming season.
"All off season we said 'nine minutes, nine minutes.' Those nine minutes are going to be our motivation to make playoffs this next near," said quarterback Keagan Jeffrey.
A possible district championship game is the final of our Top Match Ups for Week 9. The Cisco Loboes and the Colorado City Wolves are picked to finish 1 and 2, respectably in District 4-2A Division II by Texas Football Magazine. If they are right, the winner of this one will win the crown. The Loboes handed the Wolves their only loss in district last season, but Colorado City ended up going 3 rounds farther in the playoffs.
A pair of games are good but not quite good enough and they are honorable mention in Week 9. The Breckenridge Buckaroos come to Merkel to take on the Badgers in District 4-2A Division I. In Class A, the Albany Lions host Cross Plains in Division II.
