The students were grouped in teams of three to five for the competition. The style of the cooking challenge resembled that of popular television show, Iron Chef. The teams were given a bag of food, a few nutritional facts, and forty minutes to create an original recipe.
During the allotted time, the competitors also were required to practice food safety procedures and calculate the nutritional information for the dish as well as the cost per serving.
The students were split into three different groups according to age. Extension Program Specialist for District 7, Garry Branham, said that this competition is growing every year and that the students love the teamwork and hands-on aspects of the competition.
