The Abilene City Council announced Thursday morning that November is Animal Abuse and Cruelty Awareness month here in Abilene.

Recently, Animal Services has been called out to Kirby Lake multiple times for animal dumping and abandonment. This area is inside the City Limits but just off a major highway, and the location of the animals dumped are out of view of anyone in the park or from the road. Yesterday, Animal Services found two 3-4-month-old puppies.

Animal dumping is against the Chapter 6 ordinance in Abilene, and the Texas Penal Code 42.092 (b) (4), and is a class A misdemeanor, meaning offenders could potentially face fines and /or jail time.

The City of Abilene and Animal Services are looking to get the word out to deter this problem.
