AISD Head Start Faces Federal Funding Cuts

AISD has found a way to keep the same number of students in the Head Start program despite $225,000 in federal funding cuts due to sequestration. Instead of cutting teachers, which would decrease the number of students in the program, the district rearranged the budget and created more pre-kindergarten classes. The only difference is which families get benefits and which ones do not.

Instead of cutting teachers, which would decrease the number of students in the program, the district rearranged the budget and created more pre-kindergarten classes.

The only difference is which families get benefits and which ones do not. Head Start provides medical, dental and family support for students in the program. Pre-kindergarten does not. This does mean fewer families will be eligible for the benefits.
