Tuesday morning at about 2:45 a.m., Officer Andrew Valdez contacted a motorist in the 900 block of South 2nd Street for a traffic violation. Officer Valdez contacted the driver and the passenger, both males. Officer Valdez was assisted by Officer Matt Allen during the traffic stop. Officer Valdez smelled the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from the driver. Officer Valdez also observed that the driver displayed indicators of intoxication. The officers also detected that the passenger was intoxicated. The driver agreed to perform standard field sobriety tests, which he performed poorly. The driver was arrested and a records check revealed the driver had one previous DWI conviction and was driving while his driver’s license was suspended. Meanwhile, the passenger had identified himself verbally to the officers on scene on several occasions. When the passenger exited the vehicle, his identification card fell out of the vehicle. The ID card revealed to officers the passenger’s true identity. A records check revealed the passenger had one outstanding parole arrest warrant for the original offense of DWI. The driver was taken to jail where he provided specimens of his breath. Breath specimens taken revealed the driver’s BAC to be 0.150 and 0.146. The driver was booked for the enhanced offense of misdemeanor DWI (Class A) based on a previous conviction and for misdemeanor Driving While License Invalid. The passenger was booked on his parole warrant and for misdemeanor Failure to Identify.
