The "Welcome to Blanket" sign off of highway 377 has been there for over twenty years, but last week it was in jeopardy of being removed by the Texas Department of Transportation. The city hall of Blanket revived a letter from TxDot saying they had forty five days to remove the sign. Since it is on a government road the sign has to abide by the federal and state law of the Highway Beautification Act. The community of Blanket fought hard to keep this sign there. To many people the sign gives them a sense of community pride. After TxDot realized that the sign is on private property they withdrew the order of removal. Now they are investigating zoning issues and the owners may have to pay a sign permit, but it looks like blanket will get to keep their sign.
